Suspicious posts by user AnthonyM698

Hello. Can we kick a user out of wikidata? I don't like the postings I see from user AnthonyM698. At best they are unnecessary, misleading, wrong and confusing. I suspect though that there is a hidden vandalism agenda. Who would change the label of the metal band Anthrax (Q109871) to Antrax? Right, nobody in their sane mind, but this user did. Insane. -- Egermundson (talk) 00:02, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Looking over their contribs shows mainly correct edits, unless I'm mistaken. Have you seen other mistakes from this user? Can you provide more specific examples (and diffs)? -- Ajraddatz (talk) 02:49, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Template:User
Thank you Ajraddatz. You are right that the contributions look mainly correct. Some of AnthonyM698's changes that I find concerning because the expressions added do not belong to the item:
https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q3870&diff=prev&oldid=1093855361
https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q6663522&diff=prev&oldid=1062951431
but that is not an attempt to vandalize anything. In fact, I see this user having fixed some vandalisms, for example:
https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q37230&diff=prev&oldid=1114566356
I overreacted and this user appears to be ok. I apologize.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I agree with OP that the change to Template:Q is inexplicable, but also with Ajraddatz that most of this user's other edits seem to be correct. In such a case, it's usually best to raise it with the user directly and ask what they were thinking. I see their user talk page only contains a welcome message, and no complaints or warnings.
Also, a quick tip: I notice that it took you four edits to restore the Anthrax page. If you look at the revision history of Anthrax, and use the two columns of radio buttons to bracket a group of changes, then you can get a diff comprising multiple consecutive edits. If you click on "undo" here, then you can revert a sequence of edits in one edit. Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 03:39, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Thank you Bovlb. I will contact AnthonyM698 about the change to metal band Anthrax (Q109871)
That is a GREAT quick tip. I did not know this, and will use it hence forth!
Good morning everyone, sorry for the bad edit of the Anthrax band. I must have been tired or overfocused on another research project. I think at that point I thought that someone confused the band and the bacteria. Thanks for having corrected it, and please accept my apologies.
Regarding the aforementioned links and edits: I thought It would be interesting to add Kenya's capital city and its different variations to further disambiguate Nairobi. As for the Lob bomb, the items added as synonyms are the latest iterations of this improvised weapon (also mentioned on its wikipedia page, History section, 5th paragraph https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lob_bomb). Template:User
Hi AnthonyM698. The problem is that those expressions belong into a different item. The expressions you added for Lob bomb are instances or subcategories of Lob bomb so should be moved. Egermundson (talk) 13:39, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Botcrux and maxlag

Looks like that this bot operated by User:Horcrux is not respecting maxlag. --Succu (talk) 13:02, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

The problem persists. --Succu (talk) 09:11, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
I am still watching the situation, and made a script which gives me real time edit rates for all users. User:Botcrux goes at ~10 edits per minute while maxlag>5, which does not matter much in terms of server load (i.e. I won't block that bot, but if other admins do so, I won't complain either).
The situation currently is that there are two QuickStatements users (User:Njzjz and User:Vladimir Alexiev) who go at ~50 edit per minute while maxlag>5, and this should not be the case. They seem to slow down to this rate from 90/min while maxlag<5, but this is not sufficient in my opinion. User:Magnus Manske has to fix this. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:04, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
Botcrux's Template:Code was set to 6, now I have set it to 5. --Horcrux (talk) 13:03, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

Most of the descriptions by this user (in Russian) look dubious, at best non-neutral, provocative and generally unsuitable. Maybe not a clear-cut case, but it's worth noting that he's already got an indef in enwiki for WP:NOTHERE. — Mike Novikoff 01:37, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

I don't have time to thoroughly review the user's contributions now, but I've reverted one very clearly POV en description and think the Russian ones deserve some scrutiny. I favour an indef. block if similar issues are found. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 04:04, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
Most Russian descriptions they add are not acceptable. They probably need to be warned first and blocked if they continue.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:27, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, that's exactly what I've thought of. I've even looked for a warning template but could not find a suitable one. Ok, I'll write a custom warning then. — Mike Novikoff 20:50, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

More bots ignoring maxlag

At the moment (and that for some days now) there is a 5 minute slot were bots are allowed to edit, followed by a 30 minute period (or more) were max lag is to high. --Succu (talk) 17:31, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

I blocked User:KrBot, as it was indeed running at 100 edits per minute since 2PM today, including several phases of maxlag>5. See these Grafana charts, particularly the "Max Single User Edit Rate" panel. The other bots run at <10 edits per minute or do not operate in an entity namespace, which effectively does not matter in terms of load. —MisterSynergy (talk) 17:52, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
Given the decision about the other bots, would you consider blocking it just from editing items? --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 10:03, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
Good idea, done. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:07, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Can we exempt KrBot and ListeriaBot from this? They are maintenance processes of Wikidata similar to (missing) Wikibase software features such as User:MediaWiki_message_delivery. --- Jura 12:38, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Well, we do already handle this entire thing considerately on an individual case-by-case basis. In this case, KrBot has added descriptions to category items, which is clearly not an essential task that urgently needs to be done at 100/min when everybody else waits for server capacities. It would be hard to justify such an exemption. Mind that KrBot can meanwhile edit all namespaces but the main namespace, so I guess it should be able to do most of its "maintenance processes" right now. —MisterSynergy (talk) 17:48, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
      • I see. Maybe the duplicate statements and redirects cleanup process should go on an (exempt) KrBot3 account. --- Jura 17:52, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
  • I concur that KrBot performs essential maintenance, I particularly rely on its redirect fixes, they will be sorely missed if this continues. ArthurPSmith (talk) 14:32, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
    • It is up to Ivan to fix this, however he is unfortunately barely active these days. He has received warnings regarding KrBot's edit pattern before this case happened; neither maxlag nor the limited server resources are a new thing; and implementing a policy-compliant bot is not that difficult either. --MisterSynergy (talk) 15:58, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Vandal, please revdel

  • https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata%3AProject_chat&type=revision&diff=1135100963&oldid=1135087983Justin (koavf)TCM 06:34, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Revision deletion is not warranted. This is run-of-the-mill spam.--Jasper Deng (talk) 06:35, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Although I did do the revdel last time Template:Ping, and while I am deferring to Jasper's inaction in this case rather than overriding it myself, I will be less inclined to perform a revdel if all you do is simply state "Vandal, please revdel" without explicitly stating what motivates the revdel in the first place. (It does not matter to me that I as an admin can view the offending edit myself to see what might possibly motivate the revdel, or that you've explained your reasoning regarding such revdels to me before, or that the admins may be expected to somehow infer the same reason every time you do this; there is a difference between abbreviating a reason--which at least provides some transparency to the outside observer regarding the underlying cause--and omitting it entirely--which, absent other extraordinary circumstances, is unconscionable.) Mahir256 (talk) 06:59, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
      • Template:Ping We shouldn't host spam here. Who knows what kind of crazy malware is at this site? It adds absolutely nothing to the Project Chat to keep it in the history and someone could end up going to this dodgy nonsense. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:13, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
        • Template:Ping Thus, thanks for removing it. However, there's no harm in leaving it visible in the history. One can easily see why the edit was removed, and it does not appear to be blatantly dangerous (such as extreme pornography). By your argument, all spam should be revision deleted. That is overkill and isn't conducive to transparency and accountability of admins. What if I reverted and hid all your comments under the guise of spam and all the other admins did the same? I wouldn't actually do that, but it's still a reason why I think transparency is important.--Jasper Deng (talk) 07:36, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
          • Template:Ping I don't know if it's malware or not: no way am I clicking on it. But your argument is "What if admins used their tools in ways they shouldn't?" and the answer is, "They should be de-sysopped". I don't understand the point that you're making with hypothetically calling all my posts spam: they aren't, and this is. —Justin (koavf)TCM 15:15, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
            • Template:Ping The point is, we should not hide edits that are not blatantly offensive, and other users must be able to hold admins accountable; call me the devil's advocate but hiding edits from them is one hypothetical way to sweep things under the rug. Your only option is to get explicit consensus against my decision here.--20:56, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Since joining Wikidata a few days ago the user Template:User has been vandalizing Macedonia related items by removing the interwiki links to articles in Greek and Bulgarian. It's quite clear that each nation (and its corresponding Wikipedia) has its own historical bias especially on such sensitive subjects but removing the appropriate links to other Wikimedia projects is downright vandalism. After being warned several times by me and other users he just kept on engaging in a revert war. Please take corrective measures. Thanks. --ShockD (talk) 10:30, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

I have blocked them from editing items or properties until they discuss the issues here. I agree: disagreeing with the content of a particular wiki's articles is not grounds to delink them here.--Jasper Deng (talk) 10:40, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Please note that the inter language links of the following articles: https://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BD%D1%86%D0%B8_(%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%86%D0%B8%D1%8F) and
https://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BD%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D0%BB%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%82%D1%83%D1%80%D0%BD%D0%B0_%D0%BD%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%BC%D0%B0
belong to another category https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Linguistic_controversies
and thus should be removed from Macedonian Language (Q9296) and Macedonians (Ethnic Group) (Q2436423). They are in contravention with the notions of Language (wrongly referred to as a Norm in the first article) and Ethnic Group (wrongly referred to as NorthMacedonian in the other) which is the basis for being linked in the first place and thus should be removed or otherwise moved to a different Category or disambiguated. Only then could they be assigned to another interlanguage link. As proposed to ShockD maybe the example of this category could serve in the resolution of this dispute: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Linguistic_controversies. or introduce a Category:Contested Ethnic Groups.
I wish to urge to bg wiki editors to refrain language interlinking bg wiki Categories and Portals containing fabricated facts such as NorthMacedonians (Ethnic Group)(Северномакедонци) or Македонска литературна норма (referring to the Macedonian Language). Consensus exists that the Macedonian is a language. There is no consensus that North Macedonians (Ethnic Group) are an ethnic group. Subjective views of bg wiki editors should be considered as acts of vandalism towards the rest of the community, since they fail to substantiate their claims with credible references and fail to enjoy the consensus of the rest of the community about these 2 issues.
Please restore my credentials or otherwise propose other remedy or refer us to Dispute Resolution on these 2 issues.

"Section resolved" on Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard

Hey everybody, I am a seriously annoyed by the plenty of Template:Tl edits that particularly non-admins make on this page. Can we please be a little more careful with this procedure, please? I have difficulties to follow current cases when they are removed too quickly from this noticeboard. Clearly not everything which might seem resolved is actually resolved.

Does anyone feel the same, or different? Should we change something regarding use of Template:Tl on this noticeboard? —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:01, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Things do disappear pretty quickly. Would it be worth changing the archive bot to leave "resolved" sections up for an extra day or two? And try to not tag sections that aren't completely/easily resolved immediately. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 19:09, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
They are actually archived after one day. Putting three days in Template:Tl instead of one will be a good idea. --Fralambert (talk) 19:38, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Template:Ping I think that non-admins should be limited to using that template for routine requests, defined as vandalism reports that were answered with a block (many "false" vandalism reports like above should not be closed hastily as there is often still an underlying issue), undeletion requests, and protection requests answered with protection (excepting edit warring cases since again, there's often still an underlying issue). How does that sound?--Jasper Deng (talk) 20:58, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Template:PingI think that non-admins should be limited to using that template for routine requests, defined as vandalism reports that were answered with a block What about requests to Semi-protect items that were answered with a semi-protection? --Trade (talk) 22:01, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Template:Ping "Protection" includes "semi-protection" here. Semi-protection is a subclass of protection.--Jasper Deng (talk) 22:13, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Is there any benefit to resolve a problem here via Template:Tl? I doubt that. --Succu (talk) 22:11, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Perhaps there is, since the resolved topics are archived faster and don't clutter the page. I nearly always use it on my own requests as advised in Template:Tl, provided that the answer (for a block or a protection request) is exactly what's been requested. — Mike Novikoff 16:20, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
As a side note, I'd mention a minor technical issue. Apparently it's meant that upon the archiving the template doesn't go there as such, but is replaced with a shorter note: "This section was archived on a request by: ...". It always works with my own signature, and with many others too, but not with all of them (see the current archive for instance). I'm not sure whether the cause is in template itself, or in the signatures, or in the way that archiving is done. Anyway, it would be nice if this flaw is fixed. — Mike Novikoff 16:20, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Newspaper is clearly linked to the falun gong, as us congress reported and Falun Gong.pdf. "On April 20, 2006, at the officialwelcoming ceremony of PRC President Hu Jintao’s visit to Washington, D.C., Ms.Wang Wenyi, a reporter for the Epoch Times, interrupted Hu’s speech by shoutingin support of Falun Gong for more than two minutes before being hustled away by U.S. security agents.". I was perhaps wrong saying it was the property of the sect. This is what is generally said in chineses shops where this newspaper is distributed freely, here in France. Perhaps an other element could be more appropriate, linked to this movement ?) but it seems important for me to be clear for Wikipedia readers about this relationship. Popolon (talk) 11:24, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi all, I have been contributing to french Wikipedia for several years on various topics. However, I still discover new stuff, especially in Wikipedia side projects. So thanks to Popolon who offers me the opportunity to dig deeper in Wikidata.

Template:Ping I always talk with people who openly contribute to Wikipedia, even if we disagree. On the Falun Gong topic, I created a neutral page discussion following a neutrality dispute. There is a consensus about Falun Gong from scholars who actually study it, as I explained in that discussion page. The consensus is that declaring Falun Gong is a cult is part of the persecution strategy of the Chinese Communist Party. See for instance:

So modifying the wikidata description of Epoch Times to "journal de la secte d'origine chinoise Falun Gong" is at least POV pushing. And, as this change was not visible on the laptop version of the Wikipedia page, I considered it was sneaky vandalism ("Any vandalism that is not immediately obvious, such as subtly changing links or statements.") when I discovered it. This is why I reverted it and did not discuss with Popolon. The description on the user page strengthened my analysis ("Popolon est un contributeur de wikipedia non-neutre, qui fait tout ce qu'il peu pour l'être et tente de remplir ce qu'il peut."). --Nibbler869 (talk) 20:59, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Template:Ping, You can't say you discover because of me as you participated to it for years now, and on this unique subject of falun gong... This a really a movement, with a leader, Li Hongzhi, and as said just previously there are strong relationship between falun gong members and Epoch Times, avoiding to show this relationship is probably a strategy of the secte movement, as editors are also sect members and Falun Gong.pdf and [1]. They are at least very actives for years in touristic places to try to gain new members, in Trocadéro near Effel Tower in Paris and in most touristic place in Taïwan, with strong and aggressive evangelistic stance, as Jehovah's Witnesses and some other American evangelist sects. They are also know to use en:Shen Yun ballet to try to get new members and hide them in their billboard en:Shen_Yun#Billing_and_promotion, this is not really fair one more time. I'm not a Chinese citizen (not from China nor Taiwan), I'm French from French family for lot of generations, and don't look at the China's government stance, but only describe the sect stance independently. That's sad to see a movement only existing because it has an enemy… When I say on my page I'm not neutral, it's only a cynical point of view to recognize that, has every human or living form, I can't be 100% neutral, even if I try as most as possible when I edit Wikipedia. But your contribution on french wikipedia are in most case related to Falun gong (like fr:New Tang Dynasty Television a Falun Gong TV channel, fr:Histoire du Falun Gong, fr:Falun Gong hors de Chine continentale, fr:Bureau 610 and as every Falun Gong members, some other topic related to HR/censorship in China. My edits are mostly in Asia culture/history/geography (mainly Eastern Asia (including China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia and Siberia), Central Asia, South and South-East Asia) a part in Europe too, and since at least 2003 that I edit wikipedia, various subjects as painting, music, engraving (more generally arts), computer science, electronics, Template:EtcPopolon (talk) 22:10, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Template:VandalReasons: Vandalism on many biographies, adding fake data as "place of death: Marina d'Or", acting during several days. Revert all their editions, please. --Pompilos (talk) 20:26, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

Blocked one week. All their additions appear to be reverted at first glance. Normally I would ask for a warning to be given first, but in this case several violations of Wikidata:Living people occurred.--Jasper Deng (talk) 20:34, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

Spam filter blocking legitimate edits

I'm trying to add the Template:P with the value of [redacted to pass spam filter for this post] to Template:Q, but I get the error "Could not save due to an error. The save has failed." Looking at the request in my browser's console I can see the error from the API which is "The text you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a blacklisted external site. The following text is what triggered our spam filter: [redacted to pass spam filter for this post]". I'm logged in, but still unable to make the edit. Could the spamfilter be adjusted to allow edits like this or should I create a phab ticket? Thanks! U+1F360 (talk) 16:41, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

  • It looks like Template:Q is missing a way for users (like a user right?) to bypass the blacklist. U+1F360 (talk) 17:17, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Even the admins are unable to bypass the blacklist. I wouldn't be surprised if stewards and oversighters were unable as well. --Trade (talk) 23:05, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
If PornHub has an "About us" sort of page, you can apply for the local whitelist of the about page on MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. — regards, Revi 08:31, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Previous discussion: Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive/2019/10#Persistent_vandalism_on_China_politics-related_items.

This LTA using IP addresses located in Hunan, China has been actively vandalizing items related to China (or Greater China) politics since last year. In Oct 2019, we (editors from zhwp) noticed this user and reported it here. Since then, "the level of vandalism in this period is likely lower than it might have been because of short-term blocking of some IPs, and protection on many of the articles". But this tendency does not last long. During the last several months, this LTA makes disrupting edits, sometimes with fairly insulting words in edit summary, every a few days. The LTA does not seem to be possible to cease without further actions. I think it is the time to reconsider that the necessarity of long-term block of IP ranges used by the user.--虹易 (talk) 12:28, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

  • I made a couple of short-term blocks, and did some reversions.
User:Bovlb/china Here is an updated set of /16s I have been monitoring on and off. Not all are equally busy, but they all seem to have the property of being used solely for this type of POV-pushing description vandalism.
While I agree broadly with what 虹易 is saying, I do not necessarily attribute these edits to a single underlying person. Bovlb (talk) 23:52, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
As I indicated in the last thread, I am open to placing a long-term block on some or all of these /16s, but it is a fairly drastic step, and I hesitate to pull the trigger without some show of support from the (admin) community. Bovlb (talk) 20:38, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
If this can not be solved by an edit filter, then, yes, probably we need to go for a range block.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:28, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Template:Ping I'm not sure whether an edit filter would be a good solution. The problem changes are primarily changing Chinese (but also sometimes English) descriptions (but also sometimes aliases). An edit filter that looks for additions or modifications of Chinese descriptions would catch most of them. We could also make this filter operate only for IP users, or conceivably even for these specific /16 blocks (if I can work out how to do that). One reason we have to be careful of wide IP blocks is that it causes chaos when blocked users rename pages (and hence attempt to change sitelinks) on other projects. Would the prevention of Chinese description changes by IP users be an acceptable compromise? Some level of throttling like one per day (to at least prevent the edit warring)? I have created Special:AbuseFilter/131 but I'm not very happy with it. Currently it is log-only. Bovlb (talk) 00:14, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
Only one hit so far, and it's a positive. Special:Diff/1149031902 Bovlb (talk) 21:19, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Four more hits, all positive. I made the filter disallow edits. Bovlb (talk) 22:11, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
